LIVING THE ARTS, DOWNTOWN ARTS SURVEY
miscellanyTHE 294 ST: LIVING THE ARTS, DOWNTOWN ARTS SURVEY SLN 53702 Spring Semester 2007 Wednesdays 1:40-4:30 Downtown Phoenix Campus, University Center #207 This brand new class will focus on art and culture in downtown Phoenix, diving into the concept of "downtown" in general, and Phoenix in particular. Phoenix is getting lots of attention right now, due to its downtown being re-imagined, both as a part of the New American University and as a New American City. This is the first time this class has been offered, and will be a great way to get in on the ground-floor of the growing downtown scene, especially its expanding cultural environment.

Our class will feature discussions of videotapes and websites created by artists, galleries, city planners, and architects, along with short readings of books and articles about downtown culture. We will go on field trips together, taking a look at what is current in the theatres, the galleries, the museums, and the clubs. We will be visited by artists, gallery curators, administrators, critics, and theorists, who will talk with us about their work, and the past, present, and future for art and culture in downtown Phoenix. This class is suitable both for those who already know something about art and culture, and those who want to know more, and will be tailored to the specific interests of the students. In February, there will be a special visit by LA-based, internationally known performance artist Tim Miller, as well as other events to bring us closer to the work of practicing artists. We will not always stay in the classroom; be prepared to walk around. We won't just talk about the city, we will become a part of it! (and remember, there's a bus that goes straight from Tempe Campus to Downtown, so you don't have to drive) Students with questions about the course should feel free to call or email me. My office hours are Tuesday 10-12 and Wednesday 2-4, but I am often in my office at other times. Office is in Dixie Gammage Hall #261.
