3rd Annual Mail Art Show!
This show is used to raise funds for our annual new/young artists' grants.
Each year we sell the art we recieve and turn the funds into grants for artists wrorking in our community.
Last year, artish.org was given a small grant.
Friday July 17th to Wednesday August 16th! Silent Auction on Friday August 4th.
Each year The Trunk Space takes the profits from the sale of art in this show and uses those funds to create grants for new & young artists working in our community.
“For us, this is a great way to discover new talent we might not have found otherwise, and also creates an opportunity for us to give back to the community, which has been very supportive of us.” Says The Trunk Space’s co-owner JRC.
For those who might not know, “Mail Art” is any creative work that must be sent thru the postal system in order to be considered complete. Mail art is simultaneously: a message that is sent and the medium through which it is sent. Throughout the 1950s, up to and including contemporary art, an amorphous international mail art network has evolved. Thousands of participants across the globe, inspired by the work of Ray Johnson and influenced by earlier groups such as Dada and the Fluxus movement, now show & trade one-of-a-kind art pieces. It is one of the longest-lasting art movements in history.
A piece of mail art can be any common form of art such as paintings, collages, photographs, illustrated letters, zines, decorated envelopes, artist trading cards, postcards, 'artistamps', mail-interviews and three-dimensional objects.
Many mail art shows feature even more absurd objects. Art (beauty in this case) is in the eye of the beholder; In the past two shows The Trunk Space has recieved video tapes, mix CDs, a hand-painted coconut, even a pair of well-worn shoes. “The neatest thing, is that no matter how odd the object, someone purchased it, knowing that the money goes to a worthy cause.”
All mail art pieces must be recieved by Monday July 17th. The show opens on Friday July 21st.
Some pieces will be sold for as little as $5.00. The most unique & outstanding can be won by silent auction, and must be purchased at Auguest 4ths First Friday.
Art donations should be sent to:
The Trunk Space
1506 NW Grand Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85007"
