This 1989 documentary, directed by Wim Wenders, shows the creative process of world-renowned Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto in Tokyo and Paris. Yamamoto sees fashion as something that allows the individual to express himself or herself, and be comfortable in one's own body. But isn't that a contradiction? Doesn't fashion exist only in mass context? If something is fashionable, doesn't that require mass adoption, and isn't it inherently antithetical to individuality? Wenders and Yamamoto discuss these philosophical issues and the sources of inspiration. Of particular interest is their discussion of legendary 20th century German photographer, August Sander. After the screening, there will be a discussion led by Fred Linch, valley film buff, and Dennita Sewell, Curator of Fashion Design. In addition, there will be a special viewing of Yamamoto's works from the Museum's Fashion Design Collection.
