Our theme this year is “Roadside Attractions.” Those curiosity ‘museums’ found dotting the highways and byways of America, begging tourists to “STOP and see the WORLD’S LARGEST KAZOO!” or “COME SEE ROCK CITY!” We’re looking for pieces of Mail Art that are inspired by these wonderful artifacts of our cultural history. Participants are encouraged to create something original about roadside attractions, or send us something from one of the many roadside stands found across the American landscape.

Other famous roadside attractions include Arizona’s “The Thing” (you’ve got to pay to find out what it is), Nebraska’s “Carhenge” (a replica of Stonehenge made entirely out of old autos), and the mysterious axe-wielding “Muffler Men” who can be found guarding gas stations & more from coast to coast!

Create a piece of art as original & odd as one of these folk art/tourist traps and be part of our Second Annual Summer Mail Art Show! Not only are we looking for art about real roadside attractions, but also ideas for what your own attraction would look like! A common features of the roadside museum is exaggeration, hoax, and fakery. Let your imagination go wild and amaze us with something that might have never been, or exists only on the back roads of your mind!

“Basically anything about weird ‘Americana’ can be inspiration for the art in this show.” Says The Trunk Space’s JRC, “And just like last year, WHATEVER WE GET WE WILL SHOW!”

For more inspiration about roadside attractions, visit the website www.roadsideamerica.com . It is the premier website for cataloging and researching the unique world of roadside culture.

This show will open on Friday July 15th and all work needs to be received by that date! As with the first show [most of] the art will sell for $5.00.

However because of quality of work we received last year, The Trunk Space has decided to chose the most extravagant pieces and offer them as Silent Auctions! We believe this option will give more people a chance to purchase a great piece of art at an affordable price. All profits will be used to create grants for local artists. This first years grant will be given in memory of Lew Alquist, a pionering artist & ASU professor who understood the importance of our vibrant downtown community. He was also a respected maker of Kinetic Sculpture. The Trunk Space’s opening reception will be on Friday July 15th (Grand Fridays) starting at 7PM.
